NOSE RESHAPING (RHINOPLASTY)
WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?
Rhinoplasty (commonly called nose reshaping surgery) is a procedure to improve the appearance of the nose including nose size, shape, width, bumps or depressions on the bridge, nasal tip, nostrils, nasal asymmetry and function of the nose. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip, narrow the width of the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. Generally this operation can help correct birth defects, heredity, nasal injuries, and help relieve some breathing problems.
Many times the facial imbalance may be related to other facial features such as the chin, cheeks or lower jaw. Procedures to correct these imbalances may be combined with a rhinoplasty to achieve overall facial harmony.

How is a Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgical procedure. Rhinoplasty surgery is customized for each patient, depending on his or her needs. There is not a universal type of rhinoplasty surgery that will meet the needs of every patient. Incisions may be made within the nose and are generally concealed in an inconspicuous location of the nose with an incision across the columella (narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils). In some situations, cartilage grafts, taken from within the nose or from other areas of the body may be recommended in order to help reshape the structure of the nose. Internal nasal surgery (Septoplasty) to improve nasal breathing can be performed at the time of the rhinoplasty. Sometimes the procedure may be limited to the tip of the nose or it may involve repositioning of the bones. Other procedures such as chin reshaping (Sliding Genioplasty) are often combined with rhinoplasty to improve overall facial harmony.
Rhinoplasty takes approximately 1-2 hours or longer to complete depending on the complexity of the case.
What to expect during the recovery period:
- Bruising and swelling around the eyes are normal and will fade within 1-2 weeks post-operatively
- Discomfort to the nose and head, which patients can control with medication
- Some light bleeding and stuffiness are common during the first few days
- You will wear a small splint to protect your nose for approximately 5 to 7 days after surgery
- Return to light activity within a few days or as you feel ready
- Resume full activity within 3-4 weeks
